The Parsis are descendants of the Iranian Zoroastrians who immigrated to India in an alleged mass-exodus, sometime between 8th to late 9th century. They are India’s smallest minority community, yet they have exercised a huge influence, as pioneers in education in 19th century India, as leading figures in banking and commerce, medicine, law and journalism, and at the forefront of India’s industrial revolution. They were also prominent social reformers and were very influential in politics.
In three sessions, researcher Hamid Moein takes us into the world of the Parsis, where we gain insights into their identity, origins, beliefs, and practices, as well as their current status in India. This is a unique chance to learn more about this remarkable community and its rich history. Every session consists of a 60 minute lecture, followed by 30 minutes for interaction and discussion.
This short course is an initiative of the department of Languages and Cultures and the South Asia Network Ghent research group.

De voorouders van de Parsis zijn Iraanse Zoroastristen die massaal naar India migreerden tussen de 8ste en het einde van de 9de eeuw. Vandaag zijn de parsis de kleinste etnisch-religieuze minderheid in India, maar wel erg invloedrijk, als pioniers in onderwijs in de 19de eeuw, als toonaangevende figuren in de bankwereld, de geneeskunde, het rechtswezen, en het journalisme, en als voortrekkers van de industriële revolutie in India. Enkele parsis waren ook invloedrijke sociaal hervormers en politici.
In drie sessies voert onderzoeker Hamid Moein ons mee naar de wereld van de Parsis, krijgen we inzicht in hun identiteit, oorsprong, geloof en gebruiken, alsook hun huidige status in India. Dit is een unieke kans om meer te weten te komen over deze uitzonderlijke gemeenschap en hun rijke geschiedenis. Elke sessie bestaat uit een lezing van 60 minuten, gevolgd door 30 minuten voor interactie en discussie.
Deze lessenreeks is een initiatief van de vakgroep Talen en Culturen en de onderzoeksgroep South Asia Network Ghent.
