"On the Importance of Research-Based Teacher Education."
On Friday, March 18, 2022, the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences will award an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. Kari Smith during the Dies Natalis celebration. Prof. Dr. Kari Smith is a full professor working at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Trondheim, Norway). At this university, she also works as a teacher educator and head of the Norwegian doctoral school NAFOL. This is a national doctoral school with a unique focus on teacher educators. Before starting her academic career, she worked as a teacher for 18 years. Prof. Kari Smith plays a leading role internationally in building research-based teacher education on the one hand, and highlighting the social importance of teacher educators on the other. By awarding an honorary doctorate to a teacher and a teacher educator, the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences is also making a public statement to underline the social importance of academically educated teachers. This is more important than ever, given the decretal mandate given to UGent in 2019 to educate academically trained teachers through the new Educational Masters’ curriculum.

Op woensdag 16 maart 2022 reikt de Faculteit Psychologie en Pedagogische Wetenschappen een eredoctoraat uit aan prof. dr. Kari Smith tijdens de Dies Natalis viering. Prof. dr. Kari Smith is verbonden als hoogleraar aan de Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Aan deze universiteit is zij ook werkzaam als lerarenopleider en hoofd van de Noorse doctoral school NAFOL. Dit is een nationale doctoral school met een unieke focus op lerarenopleiders. Voor de start van haar academische carrière heeft zij 18 jaar gewerkt als leraar. Prof. dr. Kari Smith speelt internationaal een toonaangevende rol in het uitbouwen van onderzoeksgebaseerde lerarenopleidingen enerzijds, en het onderstrepen van het maatschappelijk belang van lerarenopleiders anderzijds. Door een eredoctoraat toe te kennen aan een leraar en een lerarenopleider maakt de FPPW ook een publiek statement om het maatschappelijk belang van academisch gevormde leraren te onderstrepen. Dit is meer dan ooit belangrijk, gegeven de decretale opdracht die de UGent in 2019 gekregen heeft om academisch gevormde leraren op te leiden via de nieuwe Educatieve Masters.

In connection with this honorary doctorate, the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences is hosting a public lecture with Prof. Kari Smith on Wednesday, March 16 in Auditorium 4 (FPPW). During this lecture entitled "On the Importance of Research-Based Teacher Education", Prof. Kari Smith will discuss who teacher educators are and why research is so important for teacher education.

“Gedurende haar loopbaan - als leraar, lerarenopleider, en onderzoeker - heeft Kari Smith werk gemaakt van de uitbouw van onderzoeksgebaseerde lerarenopleidingen en het vormen van leraren die kennis hebben van onderzoek en daar ook naar handelen”
Naar aanleiding van dit eredoctoraat organiseert de FPPW een publiek lezing met prof. dr. Kari Smith op woensdag 16 maart in Auditorium 4 (FPPW). Tijdens deze lezing met als titel “On the Importance of Research-Based Teacher Education” zal Prof. Kari Smith o.a. ingaan op wie lerarenopleiders zijn, waarom onderzoek zo belangrijk is voor lerarenopleidingen, en welke verschillende modellen hiervoor van toepassing zijn.
