Are you a clinical or biomedical professional or scientist seeking expertise in tropical diseases to work in reference labs, research institutions, health-sector NGOs in the Global South, or research settings? The Master of Science in Tropical Medicine (MTM) at ITM is a 60-credit programme that takes you from the laboratory to the patient bedside, covering the full chain of tropical medicine research.

What sets the MTM apart is its integration of clinical and biomedical sciences, its focus on both pathogens and patients, and its grounding in real-world settings across the Global South. You will study in a stimulating, international academic environment, surrounded by ITM's world-renowned faculty and a diverse cohort of fellow students who bring a wealth of professional and cultural perspectives.

The programme can be completed full-time in one year, or spread over a maximum of five years part-time, giving you the flexibility to alternate study and professional work.

Target audience

The MTM is ideal for clinical or biomedical professionals and scientists who want to work in reference laboratories, research institutions or with health actors (NGOs) engaged in the Global South, as well as for scientists looking to conduct fundamental, applied or operational research in tropical medicine in academic or reference settings.

Programme

Studying at the MTM means active, participatory learning. You will engage in interactive lectures, small group sessions, laboratory practicals and individual or group assignments, all drawing on the field experience and research expertise of ITM's staff. The diverse cultural and professional backgrounds of your fellow students will enrich every discussion and deepen your comparative understanding.

The programme is structured around a core module (20 ECTS), advanced course components (25 ECTS) tailored to your area of interest, and a master's thesis (15 ECTS).

By the end of this programme, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate at an advanced level specific knowledge and insight in the field of tropical medicine;

  • Critically analyse the epidemiological, biomedical and clinical features of tropical diseases;

  • Identify and critically discuss the determinants of health related to tropical diseases;

  • Contextualize clinical and biomedical expertise in tropical medicine, taking into account the socio-economic and cultural characteristics of low resource settings;

  • Analyse and interpret the accuracy and pitfalls of laboratory tests for tropical diseases;

  • Use appropriate research tools and skills for clinical and/or biomedical research on tropical diseases;

  • Develop and implement properly the consecutive steps of a scientific research project;

  • Contribute responsibly in a professional and multidisciplinary international team;
