Description

Are you a nurse, midwife or health professional eager to expand your knowledge of tropical diseases and address current and emerging global health challenges? Do you want to be better equipped to work in resource-constrained settings or with people in vulnerable situations anywhere in the world? Then this postgraduate certificate is for you.

This programme consists of two complementary courses: Introduction to Tropical Medicine (INTROMED), empowers you to transition from managing European pathologies to tropical diseases, and Challenges in International Health (CIH), empowers you to transition from patient-oriented approach to a population-oriented approach. Together, they give you a solid foundation to become an agent of change.

Target audience

This programme is designed for health professionals including nurses, midwives, physicians, pharmacists and biomedical professionals, as well as others working in or preparing for careers in international health. It is particularly relevant if you lack prior exposure to tropical diseases or want to broaden your perspective on global health challenges.

Programme

INTROMED is a five-week course: you study at your own pace using interactive online materials, with one real-time seminar per week on Fridays, on campus or online attendance is possible. This makes it easy to combine with work.

CIH is a twelve-week face-to-face course at ITM's campus in Antwerp. You will learn through case studies, debates and collaborative exercises, guided by a multidisciplinary team of experts. The diverse, international and multi-disciplinary student group from around the world enriches every discussion.

By the end of this programme, you will be able to:

  • Explain key biomedical and clinical features of major tropical and infectious diseases, including their diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

  • Interpret simple clinical cases and propose appropriate diagnostic and treatment strategies using an integrated approach.

  • Determine the specific constraints and challenges of laboratory diagnostics in low-resource settings.

  • Assess the burden of health problems by considering frequency, severity, inequities, socioeconomic impact, and vulnerable populations in stable and outbreak contexts.

  • Design evidence-based, context-appropriate health interventions for stable and crisis settings, considering resources, stakeholders, and implementation challenges.

  • Assess local health systems in terms of access, quality of care, service organization, governance, collaboration, and crisis preparedness.

  • Discuss major global health policy issues, including the SDGs and the roles and influence of key health policy actors.
