Description

As the environmental impact of traditional pet food production becomes increasingly evident, veterinarians are called to play a more active role in guiding sustainable and health-conscious choices for companion animals. This lecture will introduce the core principles of sustainability in pet nutrition and review emerging alternative protein sources, including insect-based meals and cultivated meat. We will also examine the nutritional viability and limitations of plant-based diets for dogs and cats, along with a critical overview of popular dietary trends such as BARF, raw feeding, and home-prepared diets. The session aims to equip veterinary professionals with a balanced, science-based understanding of these developments to better support clients seeking ethical and environmentally responsible feeding options.
