We leven vandaag in een multipolaire wereld. Er zijn meerdere grootmachten, d.w.z. staten (of unies van staten) wiens beslissingen wereldwijd impact hebben, maar geen van hen heeft voldoende macht om alleen de wereldpolitiek te domineren. Die grootmachten werken samen, maar tegelijk beconcurreren ze elkaar ook: om invloed, grondstoffen, partners, en prestige. Deze interactie zal bepalend zijn voor de wereldpolitiek. Dit gaat over oorlog of vrede. In deze context is het cruciaal om de Grand Strategy van de grootmachten te kennen: wat zijn hun doelstellingen, welke instrumenten gebruiken ze om die na te streven, over welke middelen beschikken ze, wie zijn hun partners?
Deze micro-credential laat deelnemers kennismaken met de basisprincipes om wereldpolitiek te begrijpen. Daarvoor zal doorheen de lens van 4 belangrijke spelers op het toneel bekeken worden: Verenigde Staten van Amerika, China, Rusland en de Europese Unie. De cursus besteed hierbij in het bijzonder ook aandacht aan de strategische geschiedenis van deze spelers.

We are living in a multipolar world. There are several great powers, i.e. states (or unions of states) whose decisions have global impact, but none of them has sufficient power to dominate world politics by itself. Those great powers cooperate, but they are competing with each other at the same time: for influence, resources, partners and prestige. This interaction determines world politics. This is about war or peace. In this context, understanding the Grand Strategies of the great powers is crucial: what are their objectives, which instruments are they deploying to pursue them, what is their resource base, who are their partners?
The micro-credential introduces participants in the basic principles of world politics. Therefore it will focus on 4 essential actors: United States of America, China, Russia and the European Union. The course specifically focuses on the strategic history of those actors.
