From Mine to Finger. A deep dive into the world of Diamonds is an intensive summer school, hosted by the University of Antwerp and the Antwerp World Diamond Center (AWDC). Throughout this intensive programme, students will discover the world of diamonds in every aspect. Topics include the historical, geological, technical, economical, commercial and ethical perspectives of the global diamond trade. Additionally, the course offers a series of talks focusing on future trends, challenges and opportunities by focusing on innovation and sustainability in the Industry in all its facets. The course includes fascinating virtual site visits, lectures, workshops and keynotes by internationally renowned academics and professionals. This second digital edition offers the same inspiring content, innovative approach and collaborative environment as the physical version does.
The summer school is targeted at final year Bachelor students and Master students from different disciplines, as well as at young professionals and researchers, interested in deepening their knowledge about diamonds and its industry.
The preparatory track and actual course exist of several building blocks, immersing participants in the historical, geological, technical, economical, commercial and ethical perspectives of the global diamond trade. Additionally, participants will be virtually immersed in the vibrant "diamond square mile", the relatively small but highly secured area comprising three streets alongside Antwerp’s Central Station, where some US$220 million worth in loose rough and polished diamonds are admired, sold, bought and manufactured on a daily basis. Participants will embark on a virtual tailor-made visit behind the scenes, revealing all facets of the Antwerp diamond industry, including the Diamond Office, streamlining the vast flow of imports and exports, high-tech polishing factories and world-renowned grading labs for polished diamonds.
3 ECTS credits are awarded upon successful completion of the programme.
The summer school will be hosted via Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, the collaborative online learning platform of the University of Antwerp. Participants need to have a stable internet connection, a headset, a computer and a webcam. The summer school offers a variety of teaching methods. Most sessions will be held “live” in the CEST time zone as to enable interaction and debate. All lectures will be recorded and made available so that participants joining from different time zones can catch up at their own convenience. Some theoretical or introductory sessions will be recorded and shared beforehand. Moreover, an interactive workshop and several breakout sessions will assure the exchange of knowledge and perspectives among the participants.
