Lectures and workshops on children's and YA literature

Description

The Children's Literature summer school offers plenary lectures, workshops and optional activities related to books for children and adolescents. Participants choose workshops from four thematic strands in children’s literature research:

  • history of children’s literature
  • multimodality in children’s literature
  • children as readers
  • ecology and children’s literature

This summer school is mainly targeted at Master and PhD students, but also open to more senior researchers and professionals with an interest in children’s literature studies. Participants should have at least completed 3 full years of undergraduate education (BA level) by the time of the summer school.

PhD students are given the opportunity to present their research projects or give a 20-minute paper in two workshops that will be reserved for this purpose. They will be invited to submit an abstract when they register for the summer school.

Program

This five-day programme focuses in 2023 on four thematic strands in children’s literature research:

  • history of children’s literature
  • multimodality in children’s literature
  • children as readers
  • ecology and children’s literature

Browse through the strands to get a glimpse of lectures and workshops. All participants can watch all plenary lectures before the summer school commences. These lectures will be pre-recorded and will be made available via Blackboard. Social activities, such as themed lunches, will be planned between 13.00-14.00 CEST.

Participants are then divided into small, interactive workshops according to their preferred thematic strand. All workshops (live classes in a digital environment) will be held between 14.30 and 17.00 CEST (Central European Summer Time), to allow participants from as many time zones as possible to attend. Each workshop includes a list with required advance reading. All participants are expected to complete this reading before the start of the workshop. A PDF of the academic articles and chapters will be provided on Blackboard, which will become available to participants a few weeks before the summer school starts. Participants are expected to get hold of the primary reading materials themselves.

Most workshops also list an assignment for students who want to earn credits for the summer school. Please respect the deadlines and guidelines for submission.

Remarks

3-6 ECTS credits are awarded upon successful completion of the programme. Note that University of Antwerp students can only register for 6 ECTS.
