This presentation will focus on mucogingival surgery around teeth, addressing the management of soft-tissue deficiencies in the natural dentition. The prevalence and clinical significance of gingival recession and reduced keratinized tissue will be outlined, with particular attention to their impact on esthetics, dentin hypersensitivity, and plaque control. The etiology of mucogingival problems will be reviewed, including traumatic toothbrushing, periodontal disease, anatomical predisposing factors, and iatrogenic causes.
The biological principles of root coverage and augmentation of keratinized gingiva will be presented, followed by a discussion of surgical techniques, such as coronally advanced flap procedures, connective tissue grafts, and the use of substitute materials. Clinical outcomes in terms of root coverage predictability, increase in soft-tissue thickness, and long-term stability will be summarized. Finally, emphasis will be placed on patient-related factors, indications, and limitations, as well as the importance of maintenance care for the stability of surgical results.
