Description

As a researcher, it is becoming more important to look beyond the borders of your area of expertise. Interdisciplinary collaboration can provide new insights to pressing research questions. With this in mind, the Scientific Research Committee and the departments of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences organise 'Interdisciplinary Medical & Health Seminars' together. Both state-of-the-art fundamental (bio)medical research as well as translational and clinical research are discussed.

Program

Prof. Barroso’s research goal is to accelerate pre-clinical drug discovery by developing novel imaging assays to screen and optimize the delivery of targeted anti-cancer drugs. She is also interested in the regulation of membrane trafficking pathways and of receptormediated cholesterol and iron transport in vitro and in vivo. Prof. Barroso’s diverse expertise integrates basic cell biology with methodological advances in imaging technology to position her research group as a major force in the visualization, quantitation, and optimization of drug delivery into cancer cells using receptor-targeted approaches.

We have established Macroscopy Fluorescence Lifetime FRET (MFLI-FRET) non-invasive imaging approach to provide in vivo information on drug-target engagement in deep tissues. We showed that MFLI-FRET measurements correlate with receptor binding in tumor cells, but strikingly, not with ubiquitously used ex vivo receptor expression assessment. Recently, we have extended this assay to anti-HER2 antibody drugs, e.g., trastuzumab, to report quantitatively on antibody-target binding in live intact animals at the tumor level.
